The Ionian Greek city-states decided to revolt against the Persian Empire which started the Persian War.
Darius sent his huge navy which was carrying his massive Persian army, across the Aegean to start the land war. His goal was to conquer Athens then control the other arrogant city-states.
When Darius died his son, Xerxes swore to take revenge on all of Greece. He spent 10 years raising a massive army to destroy Greece. This battle was the battle of Thermopylae.
The Persian ships were much larger than the Greeks, but were not built for confined spaces. Because of this the Persian ships were trapped. Xerxes navy was completely destroyed.
The Athenians defeated the Persians for the last time at the battle of Plataea. Xerxes never again tried to invade Greece.
Sparta was left very weak while Athens was the most powerful city-state.
