  • Slide: 1
  • The slaves were working on plantations such as sugar and tobacco plantations and were being given no rights and respect from their masters. They were sick of the way they were living and decided to take action to gain their independence and freedom from the Europeans who colonized them in Haiti. These ideas stemmed from the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen by the French National Assembly. The slaves wanting to rebel was a step towards democracy and getting back their rights.

  • Slaves started to rebel by killing their masters and setting their houses on fire. This was a step towards democracy by getting rid of the people who took the slaves rights away

  • We should help the slaves get their freedom back!
  • Maroon societies which were the individuals who already escaped slavery in Haiti began to help the enslaved get their freedom back. They were successful with abolishing slavery for a few years until Napolean reinstated slavery, angering the Haitians more. When slavery was reinstated, that was a step away from democracy since rights were being removed again.
