Tom spends most of his time focused completely on work and nothing else. His wife Clare is hopeful she will get him to join her one of these nights and get him away from his work.
Tom loves his work so much that he feels he needs to risk his life to climb out of his window just to retrieve a piece of paper. The future of his career clearly means a lot to him due to the endless nights he spends devoted to it and now he is climbing out of a window onto a ledge, 11 stories up, to get one paper.
Tom initially goes out to retrieve the paper carefully, but without much concern. As Tom bends down to retrieve the paper, the true danger of his situation becomes clear as he views the street 11 stories below him. He is then paralyzed by his fear, and unable to move.
Tom finally comes to the conclusion that his only option to ever get back in is to attempt breaking the window with his most forceful punch possible. However, if he does not succeed in breaking the glass the force will knock him off the ledge to fall to his death.
Tom manages to succeed in breaking the glass with his forceful punch. He climbs through the window pushing the glass shards into the room and ends up back in his home.
Tom has successfully gotten back into his house by the end. The first thing he does after he enters his house is join his wife at the theater. The event has changed him as a person and made him realize to stop focusing so much on work and become aware of the other important things in his life.
