Chapters 4~6 A'B Scene

Storyboard Text

  • In the study room, Princess Anna Comnena was listening to her grandmother, Anna Dalassena, drone on about the Princes' mother, Irene Ducaena. Little did they know who was about to step in and overhear what was going on...
  • Despite the ineffective rule of the Ducases,  some people in Constantinople had a soft spot for your mother's family So, even though everyone she has not the wit to rule, Irene has a throne next to your father, who was foolishly besotted with her pretty face!
  • ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~
  • PLEASE! Everyone knows that my mother is as strong and wise as she is beautiful!
  • Wha-?!
  • ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~
  • *Urp*
  • *Ahem*
  • Hello, Irene. Do you have a reason for interrupting my important lessons with Anna?!
  • ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~
  • This won't end well...
  • Yes. I wanted to see what you were teaching my daughter, and I'm glad I did! She mustn't believe everything you tell her!
  • Now, I want the Princess to come study with me.
  • ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~
  •   Ugh.  I knew I should have left my lesson earlier! Then Mother wouldn't have come looking for me here and this conversation would have been avoided...
  • Wait. Let the child decide who to study with.  It is, after all, her future at stake. I want to make clear, though, that Anna will need someone who is experienced in statecraft to guide her. I have knowledge of all areas of rule-- war, peace, diplomacy, economy-- what do you have to offer, Irene?
  • ENOUGH. Decide, Anna.
  • I know what is truly expected of a ruler, unlike you! After all, I was raised in a palace, not a goatherd's tent!
  • ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~
  • I have God's law, compassion, mercy, and justice.
  • I suppose Mother's gentle rule does seem appealing. But since Father is ruling under Grandmother, shouldn't I follow his example and have her as my teacher too?
  • Also, Grandmother was the daughter of a goatherd? That, too, Armenian?
  • I'm sorry, Mother, but I will need my Grandmother to help me rule in the future. I will happily learn from you too...
  • Mother, I want to learn your lessons, too!
  • ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~
  • Unbelievable! That woman managed to turn my own daughter against me! Perhaps I should tell Alexius.  He'll surely be worried about the Princess' education after hearing what I have to say.
