You would expect the American to jump in fear, but instead, he was very calm since he knew the snake would strike with all of the commotion.
The characters believe that the American was the one who noticed the snake first, and was the only person who saved the day. This is untrue, since the audience knows Mrs.Wynnes was the one who had the most control(since she did not say a word)
This scene shows that your gender does not have an impact on the matter of control you have. Since the colonel said that in situations (like this one) a woman would have panicked, rather than being brave like Mrs.Wynnes and not saying a word.
