Today's Lesson: Slavery Rhode Island
Hello students! Today we will be learning about slavery and it's historical connection to Rhode Island. Did you know that Rhode Island has a long history of being involved with the slave trade in the 1700's?
On these farms, slaves worked to produce whale oils, lumbers, and ingredients used to make rum that could then be sold and traded with other nations.
Newport was used as a port for bringing slaves into the country from places like Africa and the West Indies. People came here to purchase slaves to work on farms around the state.
Ya, why are you telling us about these awful things Rhode Islanders did?
That's a great question! Please see my next story board link where we will discuss just that!
