Storyboard Text

  • Welcome to the factory of the cells, come with me to see all the processes of cellular respiration
  • Welcome to the cytoplasm, home of the first step, glycolysis.  Here glucose is broken down into Pyruvic Acid and pyruvic oxidation occurs

  • Now join me at the Mitochondrial Matrix, where the Krebs Cycle takes place. Pyruvate has been transported and converted into Acetyl CoA. Here Acetyl CoA joins with a acceptor molecule to form Citrate. The citrate then goes through the cycle releasing Carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen until it has been converted back to the acceptor molecule

  • Next on the tour we have the inner membrane of the mitochondria, home of the electron transport chain. This is one of the most complicated steps of of cellular respiration. Here molecules generated in the Krebs cycle such as NADH and FADH release the hydrogen protons into proton pumps which move the protons into the inter-membrane space. This process also moves highly charged electrons into a transport chain, so they can provide energy before joining with oxygen to form water. After enough Hydrogen molecules have been built up, the graident forces them through a channel where they activate ATP synthase to form 34 ATP molecules from ADP and the ATP synthase.
