Being a farmer was a hard job because it was hard to survive, especially because they had to pay tribute. Farmers could not own land either. Farmers where most of the population. Since the empire was on such a small piece of land there was no room to farm so they created there own farmlands on water, called chinampas.

The Aztecs grew wealthy through trade networks. Merchants traveled through out the empire with goods in search of trade. Merchants also acted as spies for the ruler, informing the ruler of any wrong doing.
