  • Exposition
  • Inciting Incident
  • Rising Action
  • In the beginning of the Lottery, the little boys gather rocks into a big pile.
  • Climax
  • Then people start gathering in the middle of town. Mr. Summers and Mr. Graves show up to conduct the lottery with a black box that sits on a stool. Tessie showed up late and laughed about with some of the others.
  • Falling Action
  • When the Lottery begins the men form each household reach into the box and grab a piece of paper. The order of the families is alphabetical.
  • Resolution
  • When the men unfold their paper to see if they have the paper with the black dot. Mr. Hutchinson had the black dot.
  • Since Mr. Hutchinson drew the paper with the dot, all of the Hutchinsons had to draw again. There would be five slips of paper, with only one of them having the black dot.
  • Tessie Hutchinson, the wife of Mr. Hutchinson, drew the paper with the black dot. Then all of the others grabbed the rocks from the pile and stoned her to death as the cried for mercy.
