- Oracle warns them that a son would be the death of them and the kingdom

- King Laius and Jocasta abandon their son to escape prophecy
- Jocasta line 785: An oracle came to Laius one fine day (I won’t say from Apollo himself but his underlings, his priests)
- Oedipus grows up and kills king Laius at the crossroads
- Jocasta line 786: it declared that doom would strike him down at the hands of a son, our son, to be born of our own flesh and blood.
- With the riddle of the Sphinx Oedipus becomes king
