The narrator lives on a lake community and has a crush on his neighbor Shiela Mant. She is 17 which is 3 years old than he is. The narrator plans on asking her out soon.
During the summer Shiela tans on a float outside her house. The narrator does laps near her to try and impress her that he can swim well but she is more interested in the college guys that row past their houses.
The narrator goes over to Shielas house while their family is playing baseball and asks her out. She doesn't say no but instead asks if he has a car. He responds with that they will go by canoe.
While going to the fair the narrator accidentaly hooks a huge fish since he accidentally brought his fishing rod out of habit.
The narrator decides to cut the fish loose and immediately regrets his decision whenever she starts talking about Eric.
The narrator goes to the fair and dances with Sheila Mant but when everything is over she goes home in Eric's corvette.
