  • What women had the power of
  • The society in Japan was mountainous archipelago, or a chain of many islands. The population was spread across 4 main islands.  Only 11 percent of land could be farmed. Prone to lots of earthquakes.  They developed many unique qualities.
  • What Women Were Involved in
  • Trade between regions grew, goods were carried on boats or on human backs. Foreign trade was mainly in China and Korea. They shipped raw materials, paintings, swords, and other manufactured items.
  • Japenese Religion
  • Women may have had a certain level of equality with men.  Wives who were abandoned could divorce and remarry. Women did not possess the full legal and social right of men, they played an active role at various levels of society
  • The Emerge of Zan
  • Aristocratic women were prominent at court. The women are doing spring paintings, threshing and hulling rice, and acting as salespersons and entertainers.
  • The Japenese used to believe animals and plants held a divine power called Kami soon, Buddhism and confucianism beliefs made their way to Japan as the main religion.
  • Zen emerged because of self discipline and is a sect of Buddhism. Some aristocratic men believed prose writing was "vulgar gossip" women from the 9th and 12th century wrote the most in this area.
