- George and Lennie were on a walk to find a place to rest at. Shortly after, they arrive at a lake. Quickly, Lennie leans down to drink the lake water. George scolds him and tells him that he is going to get sick. Although, Lennie tempted George, which made him drink some of the lake water as well.
- Later as it got darker, George and Lennie found a place to set up a small fire to heat themselves up, along with some canned food to eat. Lennie then asked George if they had ketchup, which made George upset. George tells Lennie about how there's always something else he needs. To top it off, George also said his life would be better off without Lennie. Lennie got upset after George's remark.
- It was a new day, Lennie and George found the ranch that they were going to work for. They also meet Candy for the first time! Candy then leads Lennie and George to the boss' work area to let him know that they're here. As soon as they finished talking with the boss, Lennie and George got their assigned teams.
- When Lennie and George start working, a man on their team named Slim becomes friends with them. Slim got along with George and the two of them started talking. Sooner or later, Lennie tagged along with George since he overheard Slim talking about puppies with another worker before they started working. Slim and George agreed to give Lennie one of the puppies to him so that he could take care of it.
- After Lennie had his puppy for a while, he did something he wished he didn't do. He walked inside of the barn, crying. He accidentally killed his puppy. While he sits there, mourning the death of the puppy, someone walks in. It was Curley's wife. She spoke to Lennie for a bit and they carried on a small conversation. Lennie talked about rabbits, since he likes soft things. Curley's wife had an idea, and asked Lennie to feel her soft hair.
- As Lennie was stroking Curley's wife's hair, she began to feel uncomfortable. Curley's wife told Lennie to stop before he messed her hair up. Lennie wouldn't stop, which caused Curley's wife to yell. This made Lennie freak out, so he covered her mouth with his hand and had a grip on her neck. She kept screaming in his hand, this made Lennie become very aggressive to the point where he snapped her neck on accident.
