We want to share in your glory and be your right and left hand men. Give us the same authority you have with the people.
I don’t think you realize the weight of what you’re asking me to do. Will you be able to go through all of the trials I am going to go through? Can you say you will be able to take up the cross you have been destined to? Will you, even when innocent, be able to take on punishment for the sake of others?
Then you are accepting the destiny that I have accepted, to suffer for the good of others. However, I cannot put you at my left and right hands. That choice is only for my Father to decide.
We can do it.
Why does Jesus give James and John this authority? What about us?
Come, the rest of you.
If you will share in my glory and have the authority I do, then the authority you have must be used purely to serve others. I am not giving James and John, or any of you, the authority to rule over others as Gentiles rule over their subjects. That is not your mission. The authority I have is purely for the good of others, and that is the authority I am granting.
