Gibbons V Ogden 1824
I, Thomas Gibbons , am running a successful steamboat monopoly in new your and New Jersey
We used to be partners, now you have turned against me
Well, what can the government do, with the commerce clause they cant touch us, at least I think.
Gibbons has taken my name off of my company and is providing steamboat travel on my water, he is not only stealing buissness from me, but he is also taking my profits
I recieved a license from the Federal government, and according to the coasting act of 1793 I can operate my boats in any waterway in any state, and anyways my boats are not commerce
Congress reserves the power to regulate stamboat travel between two states if it is being used for the sake of interstate commerce.
