Phineas and Gene leave the tea party hosted by Mr. Patch-Withers.
Let's go jump in the river. We need to clear our heads of that party, all that talk!
Phineas tells Gene that they should go jump into the river. Gene unwillingly follows along.
Phineas says that he does not believe the Allies bombed Central Europe, and Gene agrees.
No, I don't think I believe it either.
I don't really believe we bombed Central Europe, do you?
As the two boys walk along the river to the tree to jump out of, Gene recognizes how lucky he is to be able to be "selfish in the summer of 1942" (30).
Gee! I'm lucky
As they get to the tree, Finny asks Gene if he is still afraid of jumping out of the tree, and Gene says he is not.
Are you still afraid?
It will be pleasant!
After the two boys swim around in the water for a while, Finny asks Gene if he would like to jump first, and Gene concurs.
Will you do me the pleasure of jumping out of the tree first?
