Aftermath of Election
Formation of Confederacy
Abraham Lincoln represented the Republican Party and believed in not having slaves. Douglas represented the Northern Democratic Party and believed in slavery, but also in popular sovereignty. Bell represented the Constitutional Unionist Party and believed in slavery and supporting the union. Breckinridge represented the Southern Democratic Party and believed that the federal government should protect slavery.
Abraham Lincoln ends up winning the Presidency by having the most electoral votes, even if he didn't win any Southern votes. Due to him winning, southern states, not all, secede from the Union and form the Confederacy.
The Southern states which disagreed with Lincoln's beliefs and his election, decided to secede from the Union. They formed the Confederacy, which was made up of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. Arizona, Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina would join after the attack on Fort Sumter.
