Helen Keller's teacher Anne Mansfield Sullivan gives Helen a hug, to ensure to her that everything will be alright. Helen has been getting very frustrated and angry since it is so hard for her to learn compared to other kids.
Helen gets frustrated while Mrs. Sullivan is trying to teach her that different items can have the same name. In this moment she is teaching her that two different dolls have the same name, "doll" but at first Helen does not understand this.
Mrs. Sullivan places a mug in Helen's hand and spells out mug, Helen understands that this is a mug. Mrs. Sullivan then puts Helen's hand in the mug, which is filled with water. Mrs.Sullivan spells out water in Hellen's hand. Helen indicates that she does not understand this. She wonders how it is a mug and water at the same time. Mrs. Sullivan later takes Helen to a water pump. She lets the water run into Helen's hand and then spells water into her other hand. Helen now understands.
