Candy and Jim Duke were the couple that found the bottle.
The paper inside of the bottle was a message from the U. S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries. The bottles were sent out to track ocean currents. Whoever found a bottle would receive 50 cents.
Ocean currents move this way
They found the bottle a couple weeks ago on a Saturday. It was originally sent out 50 years ago.
Its so cool how scientists used to track ocean currents before!
I know right? I also liked how they got people to participate in their research.
The bottle was found in Padre Island National Seashore in Texas
I think that the author wanted to show us one of the ways scientists tracked ocean currents in the 1960s. Another reason was that he/she wanted to show us how the government had citizens participate in their research in past times, because they don’t do that very often anymore.
I was very surprised to hear that the bottle was in the ocean for so long. I also didn't know that this was how scientists used to track ocean currents.
