Raymond plays on the curb while Squeaky practices breathing exercises.
Gretchen and her squad are rude to squeaky and her brother.
Mr. Pearson with his clipboard tells squeaky to purposely lose the dash and gives her her number.
Squeaky dreams she is flying over a sandy beach in the early morning sun, kissing the leaves of the trees as she flies by with the smell of apples and she gets lighter and lighter until she is flying over the beach again, getting blown through the sky like a feather that weighs nothing at all.
she hears Raymond yanking at the fence then like a dancer he starts climbing up nice and easy but very fast. And it occurs to her, remembering how he looked running with his arms down to his side and with the wind pulling his mouth back and his teeth showing and all, Raymond would make a fine runner.
Squeaky wins first and Gretchen wins second. Gretchen nods and smiles to congratulate her and Squeaky smiles. They stand there with a big smile of respect between them.
