  • HOMESTEADING AND RANCHING
  • How can we plant our crops in this kind of soil?
  • IMPACT OF THE RAILROAD
  • The Harvey houses are this way!
  • This image shows that a once small and dusty community quickly turned into a populated town.
  • BOOMTOWNS AND MINING
  • When farmers first arrived in New Mexico, they first found it hard to farm due to the lack of rain. Because of this, many families left all their work behind and went somewhere else. This picture depicts a farmer and his wife arriving to the cheap land only to find out how much work needs to be done before they start planting crops.
  • HAVERY HOUSES
  • How may I help you?
  • The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad, was the first railroad company to build tracks in New Mexico. This railroad stretched for over 3,000 miles in 1915. Because of the new railroad, this brought many job opportunities. The railroads brought new machinery to New Mexico and minerals. When people would ride the trains, they would get off and go to Harvey Houses.
  • TOURISM
  • It was hard to find anything good in New Mexico, the first major mineral strike was in 1830, but even then there were no major gold sites in New Mexico, no matter how hard they tried searching. However, Silver city and White Oaks became a quick Boomtown all because of the major mining that went on. This was all because of the mining jobs that were offered.
  • WILD WEST
  • A gang of outlaws demand the conductor to give up the train.
  • Let us take the train!
  • Two visitors entered a popular Harvey House after being on the train while traveling.
  • Harvey houses were part of the railroad's success. Because there were really no good restaurants to eat at that time, Harvey houses not only had a variety of good food, but they also had decent prices. They soon became popular and people wanted to start travelling on the railroad again because they knew they could eat well.
  • These two people represent the different emotions tourists had while visiting New Mexico for the first time.
  • Tourists would often come to New Mexico to learn about the Indian and pueblo culture. They would buy Indian pottery and rugs a souvenirs. But not everyone liked New Mexico, some tourists thought the landscape was ugly.
  • Crime was a defiant problem since New Mexico is considered part of the wild west.Untrustworthy men would often steal cattle, gold, silver and things from targeted travelers. Some outlaws came to get away from crimes in other states that they did. Famous outlaws were discovered during this time, like "Black Jack".situations like this would lead to county wars, like the Lincoln County War.
