America's Demographic Transition Model by Asher Freedman-Lawson
Come one, come all, come learn about America's Demographic Transition Model!!!
Stage 1 1610-1800
Look at all of our children! They'll be so useful in the fields once they grow up!
That's assuming they grow up! Albert has polio and I don't know what's wrong with Bessie.
Stage 2 1800-1930
Wow healthcare has enabled us to have many children!
Maybe it's time to ease up on them...
Stage 3 1930-1970
I have a job now, and we live in Detroit.
We can only afford to have two kids, and we only really want two given how crazy the war was.
Stage 1 occurred during the early stages of the United States's statehood. The US was mainly reliant on farming, and this meant that many children were needed to tend the fields. Women had 7 children on average, but 45.3% failed to survive their first year. Stage 1 is categorized by equal birth rates and death rates, as well as high fertility rates and high child mortality rates.
Stage 4 1970-Present Day
Why don't we stick with 2 for now?
Sounds good, especially because we live in an apartment in a big city.
Stage 2 occurred during the growth of America as a global super power. Healthcare improved drastically, and people began to move into the cities. People still had large families, causing a population explosion. Stage 2 is categorized by population explosion, high birth rates, lower death rates and significantly reduced child mortality rates.
Stage 5?
Stage three occurred during some of the more tumultuous parts of Americas history, and included both a drop during world war 2, and a large rise during the baby boom. Stage 3 is categorized by the continuation of population explosion, dropping birth rates and dropping death rates,
Stage 4 represented a return to overall political and social stability for the US. Stage 4 is categorized by fertility rates of around 2.1, a number the US has been within .5 of since 1970. It is also shown by near equal birth and death rates.
America is unlikely to enter stage 5, despite fertility rates falling slightly below replacement levels. America is an attractive enough destination that if they ever had issues with population stagnation, they could simply let in more immigrants.
