  • In the initial stages of what eventually lead to war, the U.S. wanted to stay neutral to avoid being pulled into another foreign war. As a result, Neutrality Acts were passed, which forbade the president from providing assistance to any nation at war. At the time, this was supported by American citizens.
  • We have to prepare for the worst! We must build up our military.
  • MILITARY DRAFT *ALL men ages 21-45 must register for the military*
  • Americans began to question their neutrality once news of Hitler's ruthless actions of domination spread. Many believed that U.S. must help those target by Hilter's cruelty. 
  • Roosevelt worked to convince Congress to agree to a compromise regarding the Neutrality Acts. It was decided that the U.S. will sell supplies to Britain, but they could only pay in cash. This became known as "Cash-n-Carry".
  • In 1940, Congress approved increased military spending and passed a law that set up the first peacetime draft, meaning that people had to join the army in case of war. This was how the U.S. prepared for a possible war if the time came.

  • On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor! The surprise attack left Americans unprepared and in shock. The Japanese bombed , not only the military bases, but defenseless civilians. Over 3,000 American lives were lost, and thousands more injured.  It was the beginning of World War II.
