We will remain NEUTRAL! We don't want another World War!
We must help! Hitler is cruel!
How can we stay neutral if so many people need our help?!
We have to help put an end to this bigotry!
We're glad to help!
Thank you so much!
In the initial stages of what eventually lead to war, the U.S. wanted to stay neutral to avoid being pulled into another foreign war. As a result, Neutrality Acts were passed, which forbade the president from providing assistance to any nation at war. At the time, this was supported by American citizens.
We have to prepare for the worst! We must build up our military.
MILITARY DRAFT *ALL men ages 21-45 must register for the military*
Americans began to question their neutrality once news of Hitler's ruthless actions of domination spread. Many believed that U.S. must help those target by Hilter's cruelty.
Roosevelt worked to convince Congress to agree to a compromise regarding the Neutrality Acts. It was decided that the U.S. will sell supplies to Britain, but they could only pay in cash. This became known as "Cash-n-Carry".
In 1940, Congress approved increased military spending and passed a law that set up the first peacetime draft, meaning that people had to join the army in case of war. This was how the U.S. prepared for a possible war if the time came.
On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor! The surprise attack left Americans unprepared and in shock. The Japanese bombed , not only the military bases, but defenseless civilians. Over 3,000 American lives were lost, and thousands more injured. It was the beginning of World War II.
