As Ponyboy and Johnny go home, along the way, a couple of Socs approach them. They looked familiar, and they arrived in a blue mustang. They wanted to take revenge because Johnny and Ponyboy "took" their girls. The Socs attempt to drown Ponyboy but he passes out since Johnny kills Bob, the attempter.
After the events, and after Ponyboy wakes up, Johnny tells Ponyboy all about what had happened. It was an act of self-defense. Johnny suggests that running away would keep them safe.
Johnny and Ponyboy realize they need upplies in order to run away. They go to Dally, and Dally gives them a gun, money, clothes and directions. He directs them to hop on the boxcar and ride out of town, and follow the church up the mountain, which was going to be there place to stay.
After settling in, both realize they need to cover up their true identity. So, Johnny forces Ponyboy to cut and bleach his hair. Ponyboy gives in, and allows Johnny to cut and bleach his hair. Ponyboy cuts Johnny's hair, too. After that session, they both sit miserably together. Johnny is sorry for murdering, and Ponyboy misses his bros. Ponyboy and Johnny spend the next days chatting, smoking, playing poker, and reading aloud.
Johnny announces that he wants to go home and turn himself in. Shortly after hearing that the Socs and Greasers were officially at war, Johnny and Ponyboy also hear that Cherry is spying for the Greasers. Bob, the boy Johnny killed, was her boyfriend. However, she knows how ruthless Bob sometimes was, and she believes Johnny acted in self-defense. Johnny announces that he wants to go home and turn himself in.
Dally doesn't want Johnny risking jail time and brutal treatment, so they turn back to go to the church. Shockingly, the church is on fire. Johnny and Ponyboy realize its because of their cigarettes. Adults and kids are trapped in there, and Dally says don't help, because its dangerous. But Ponyboy and Johnny disobey him and try to help out. Ponyboy breaks the window and helps the kids out. Johnny also tries to get the kids out, but while he is inside, he is hit by a falling beam. They are both admitted to the hospital, and Ponyboy is ok, but Johnny had passed.
