  • This is the valley of ashes - a place full of ashes and ugly views.  
  • Anemic - Lacking power; weak
  • Now he was a big man in his thirties who saw himself as superior to everyone else.
  • Hauteur - Pride, arrogance; cockiness
  •  She was in her thirties, but there was an immediate liveliness about her. 
  • Toiled - Hard work 
  • He was a blond, lifeless, weak and a little handsome. 
  • The massive liveliness that had been so apparent in the garage was changed into arrogance.
