NO.1 Chernobyl Disaster. On April 25 to 26 1986 the Number 4 reactor melted down during a safety test. The melt down was caused by a combination of a flawed design and lack of safety protocol. Around 5% of the reactor core was sent into the atmosphere.
NO.2 Independence. The final days of the cold war leading up to the fall of the USSR left Ukraine, along with many other countries, to gain independence. Ukraine inherited approximately 1,700 nuclear warheads left by the soviets. Ukraine gained many of the USSR's best weapons giving them a head start.
NO.3 The U.N. During the cold war Ukraine joined the U.N. as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR). Following the close of the cold war Ukraine kept its seat in the U.N. Due to U.N. entanglement Ukraine suffered a revolution.
NO.4 Revolution. After Ukraine gained independence there government has gone thru corruption. Modern day Russia backs the rebels and sends them aid.
NO.5 Environmental Problems, The soviets built many industrial plans with no regard to environmental issues. The Chernobyl Disaster left 1,000 square miles of land inhabitable. Ever since soviet occupation the life expediency has decreased dramatically.
