  • When southern started seceding they formed the Confederate States of America. Soon after on April 12, 1861 the Confederates attacked union troops at Fort Sumter.

  • The Union war efforts included not only reunification, but also to abolish slavery.The Union had to invade the south, defeat the confederate army, and occupy the southern territory.
