  • Christopher Columbus a Italian explorer for Spain landed in the Americas in 1492. He was looking for a faster and safer route Asia 
  • Alonso Alvarez de Pineda in 1519 was the first European to map the Texas coast and the Gulf of Mexico
  • Hernan Cortes in 1519 from Cuba the Aztecs viewed Cortes and his crew as gods because of there horses, and metal armor.  The Spanish men conquered the Aztecs for their gold and silver 
  • Cabeza De Vaca in 1528 from Mexico explored Florida and shipwrecked on Galveston island. The Karankawas provided them with food and shelter . 
  • Cornado and more than 1000 men went in search for the city of gold in 1540. They found the grand canyon, the pacific ocean and explored all the way into present day Kansas, but they never found the city of gold. So Spain ignored Texas for over 100 years 
  • La Salle was a famous explorer from France and in 1685 he arrived in Texas- Matagorda Bay. In 1687, 45 survivors of the original 400 left for Canada. On there way back La Salle was killed by his own men and only 7 survived the expedition.
