  • Americans had divide views over the french revolution
  • They declared war on monarchies which included britian 
  • A group called Jacobins seized power in France, killed king Louis xvi 
  • The revolution took place in France and wanted united states alliance and expected them to help in the war.
  • Republicians like Thomas Jefferson and James Madison  wanted to support the France.
  • Federalist like Alexander Hamilton wanted to go back to and support Britain.
  • President Washington took neither side and issued the declaration of neutrality.
  • The declaration said that the u.s. would support neither side.
  • The french sent a Edmond Genet  dipomant to win the american support but didn't persent his credentials.
  • He violated the neutrally and protocol which outraged Washington and his political backers in France fallen then he stayed here in the u.s.
