Storyboard Text

  • Seize them!
  • As soon as he was old enough, Vasco da Gama joined the navy.  
  • I come from far away and wish to trade with you.
  • As a member of the Navy, the King ordered him to attack French ships because the French had disrupted Portuguese shipping.  
  • On his eastern waterway path to India, Vasco da Gama passes the Cape of Good Hope. Previous explorers had passed this, but none were able to reach India from here. 
  • Vasco da Gama reaches Calicut, India and trades with the Hindus. He found many spices and other materials which would be valueable in Portugal. 
  • Vasco da Gama left during the monsoons and because of that many of the sailors died from scurvy. Eventually, he had to burn one of the ships because it was a liability. 
  • Vasco da Gama successfully completed his journey. Vasco da Gama’s voyage was what made Europe as powerful as it is today as these new trading routes meant access to new goods.
