A thirteen-year-old girl from Nepal named Lakshmi gets sold into sex slavery by her step-father and needs to find a way to escape.
Lakshmi is told that she will be traveling to the city to work as a maid in order for her family to afford basic necessities. Her stepfather takes her to a strange lady who pays him 800 rupees for her to go work as what she thinks is a maid. Her and the woman she calls Auntie begin the long journey to the city.

Lakshmi finds out that she was brought to the city not to be a maid, but a sex worker. She is forced to be alone is a room with men who make her do as they say. She does not follow these orders and because of this, gets beaten by the woman in charge of all of the girls named Mumtaz
A girl that lives with Lakshmi named Shahanna explains to Lakshmi how much debt she really is in. Lakshmi comes to a realization that it will take her years to fully pay off her debt, but even then Mumtaz will most likely not allow her to go home and return to her family.
One day, an American man comes to Lakshmi's room. He asks her if she wants to go to a place far away, where she won't have to be with the men. The American man leaves and tells Lakshmi that he and other men will return and bring Lakshmi to America.
The American men return along with policemen who arrest Mumtaz. Lakshmi works up the courage to introduce herself to them. She tells the men that she wants to travel to America to be somewhere clean and safe. Lakshmi leaves the Happiness House.
