Manuel talks about how he is the fourth of 7 children he has black hair, a brown face, and skinny legs. It is summer Manuel goes to school thinking about the act he is doing for a talent show. He would be signing La Bamba and during lunch hangs around with a kid named Benny how was also in the talent show and shows Benny his act. Benny sais it looks cool but if Manuel danced it would be better.
Manuel is at rehearsal for the show when Mr. Roybals record player jams that hes playing but he assures Manuel it things will be good in the play even if he has to bring his own from home. Manuel watches the other acts and thinks about doing the Karate kid one then decides not to since the recorder is broken. Also he dreams about doing really good for his act and making his sister jealous. then Benny's act is playing the trumpet and he blows it so hard it scares Manuel and he drops his recorder but thankfully it does not break. Also he thinks about at home how he messed up a project before but thinks he will do good this time.

The talent show starts with a nice does of the kids behind the curtain making fun of the teacher. The other kids do their acts and before Manuel knows it its his turn to act. It starts well and he does a cool dance move that everyone really likes but then the record gets stuck and he has to do the move over and over again and then everyone starts laughing and he gets worried. Then they end the song but it turns out everyone thought he was trying to be really funny and everyone loved it.
