In Ad 912 Abd al-Rahman became prince of Córdoba in Spain. He was the grandson of famous Abd al-Rahman the first, who had first established the Umayadd dynasty in Spain. Once Abd al-Rahman gained control he began to take power. In the first year of his reign he had captured 70 rebel forts. He was very good at controlling the government and as ruler was very tolerant in religion.

In 920 Christian forces began to move south towards Spain. Abd al-Rahman launched many attacks against the Christians. Because he did this, he defeated the armies of Leon.
In 928, he succeeded in storming Bobastro, the center of rebellion that had been going on for several years. This caused Abd al-Rahman to control all of Muslim Spain.

In 929 Abd al- Rahman named himself caliph. The caliph is a spiritual leader of the Muslim people. Because he took this title, he got more power.
However, when Ramiro the second became king of Leon, he immediately attacked the Muslim empire. After seven years, Abd al-Rahman's forces were defeated and in the final battle, Abd al- Rahman hardly escaped.
In 931, Abd al-Rahman took hold of North Africa at the city of Ceuta. The Fatmids who had been an enemy of Abd al-Rahman were stopped. However, they still continued to pose a threat even after Abd al-Rahman's death.
