Martha Corey is accused of witchcraft but Giles Corey interrupts and is taken to the vestry room. Corey states that they are holding Martha by mistake and that he only asked why his wife was reading, not accusing her.
Proctor tells Danforth that Mary Warren didn't see any spirits but he doesn't believe him. Danforth continues on to talk with Mary and asks her about the spirits she claimed to see and Mary confesses that she and the other girls pretended.
Danforth questions Abigail but she denies Mary's accusations. Hathorne questions Mary and asks her to pretend faint like she did before but she cannot. suddenly Abigail and the other girls pretend that Mary is sending her spirit out on them. Proctor informs the court about his affair and Mary breaks down and accuses Proctor for forcing her to say such things
Parris calls Danforth and Hathorne and informs them that Hale is trying tto convice prisoners to confess. Parris tells Danforth that Abigail and Mercy Lewis have disappeared. Abigail robbed Parris and he believes she and Mercy boarder a ship.
Hale informs Danforth that none of the prisoners will confess. He then summons Elizabeth to ask her to try and convince Proctor to confess. Proctor considers confessing and asks Elizabeth to respect him. She states that it is his decision and that she has forgiven him for he affair.
Proctor confesses orally but refuses to name any others. He signs the confession but tears it up when he finds out that it will be posted upon the church door. This is because he didn't want to ruin his name for his kids. Hale begs Elizabeth to change his mind but she refuses as she sees that he is at peace. Proctor is sent to die with Rebecca Nurse and Martha Corey.
