- In chapters 11-12, Doon and Lina found a mysterious figure while looking for the storeroom. While separated, they both found clues that led to the same destination: Doon went to visit the room itself and found it unlocked with the mayor in it, while Lina figured out that Looper might have been in the supply room because of her conversations with Lizzie, in which Lizzie mentions that Looper does have access to the storeroom. Lina and Doon’s only option was to tell the chief guards, as it was their only option. Now Doon and Lina are aware that the solution proposed by the mayor was a lie.
- The Escape

- In this scene in chapter 14, Lina and Doon were worried about how they would survive in Ember, especially with the generator broken. Lina and Doon discovered instructions, titled the “Instructions for Egress”, in a strange-looking box and they think it’s important from what they have deciphered from it so far. Using the instructions, they tried looking for the door mentioned in it, but once they found it, they couldn’t open it as it required a key. From the information provided in the instructions, Doon and Lina found the key in a small steel panel, along with some portable light sources laying around them: candles and matches. Using these light sources, they can now make their way through the tunnel with ease.
- Light at the End of the Tunnel

- In this scene in chapter 15, Doon was packing up because he found out that the city’s guards accused him and Lina of spreading vicious rumors about the mayor. To escape from the guards, he swiftly packed important resources that he and Lina may need for the journey to escape from Ember. Doon rushed to find Lina to inform her about the trouble that they’re in. Lina and Doon hid in their school because they knew it would be empty because of the Singing. Now Lina’s next goal is to give Clary this letter to inform her about their plan to leave Ember.
- A New Discovery

- In this scene in chapter 16, on Lina’s way to give Clary the letter, the guards captured Lina. She was then taken directly to the mayor; he lectured her on the responsibilities of Ember’s citizens. Fortunately, with the help of a blackout, she escaped and took Poppy from Mrs. Murdo. With the help of Baraa, a fellow messenger, Lina escaped to the pipeworks, however, Baraa wanted to go to the Singing. Even though Baraa worked as a messenger for a few years, he was a dear friend to Lina and managed to escort Poppy to the pipeworks where Doon was waiting for them.
- Mrs. Murdo: But-
- In this scene in chapter 19, after a long journey through the tunnels, they found a light that did not come from their candles. After they found the light, they noticed that the tunnel was coming to an end. They saw things they have never seen in their life: the sun, the moon, and other mystical sites. They finally reached the lands they were looking for all along, the city with a blue sky, the same one as the painting.
- In this scene in chapter 20, Doon and Lina found a book in the tunnel about the history of a woman that was on a journey to Ember. She explained why a group of elders and babies were forced into Ember and why the citizens of Ember didn't know about the city above it. Later, while Doon and Lina were exploring the mountains in the land, they found a hole in the ground that shows the inside of the mountain. They found Ember, not only were the pipeworks underground, the whole city was underground. Everyone that was living in the lands above was stuck in Ember to keep them safe from catastrophic events that were happening above.
- What kind of place can this be, safe from earthly catastrophes? All I canguess is that it must be underground.
