  • Boyle's Law states that the pressure and volume of a gas have an inverse relationship when the temperature is held constant. This is shown by the equation P1V1 = P2V2. The equation shows that when volume increases, pressure decreases and when volume decreases the pressure increases.

  • 1. Open "Totally Real Coke" slowly to allow gas to escape. 2. Drink!
  • The variables used in this equation are P and V. P is pressure and V is volume. Pressure and volume are inversely proportional with each other. This law will only work if the temperature is held at a constant.

  • Temperature is the only constant variable. The volume, temperature, and the pressure are proportional to each other. Boyle's law states that the volume and pressure of a gas has an inverse relationship while the temperature is constant
  • When a soda can or bottle is filled, it is also pressurized. Opening the soda allows the gas to suddenly be able to increase its volume in order to decrease the pressure. Since the soda itself is carbonated, the CO2 gases will want to escape as well and that is how you get the soda fizz.

  • Respiration Is another example of Boyle's law. As the muscles of the diaphragm contract, the decreased pressure causes the volume of the thoracic cavity to expand as you breathe in. When you breathe out, the volume of the thoracic cavity goes down, increasing the pressure on the lungs, and pushing air out.
