The Change After Ermas Past
At the start of 180, The walls are talking about Erma passing away and how she has everything planned out that she wants for her funeral. Later on in the book Uncle Stanley was in the basement and fell asleep reading his comic book and smoking a cigarette. The cigarette caused the house to catch on fire and burn to the ground, causing Uncle Stanley and Grandpa to find a new place to stay. Jeannette and the family goes to visit they Grandpa and Uncle Stanley at their new place. Jeannette was sitting watching TV with her Uncle Stan when he began playing with him self and touching Jeannette on the thigh. Later on in the book Jeannette and Brian are walking through the forest. Jeannette picked up a rotten piece of wood and found a ring. They tested the ring to see if it was real diamond and it was. This could bring great fortune to the family. Jeanette's mother keeps the ring instead. Jeannette confronts her mother while Rex is out of the house and tells her that she needs to leave dad and it will be the best for the family. At the end of the section Jeannette goes swimming with the black community and is welcomed and feels open about her body around them being the only white girl there.
" I felt uncle Stanley's hand creeping onto my thigh" (Wall 183).
The Walls family attends there Erma's wedding. Lori gets excited and says "Ding Dong the witch is dead"(180 Walls). Rex becomes furious at Jeannette !
A few months after Erma's death, Rex's parents house burst up in flames.
As Jeanette waited for her shower. Uncle Stanley put his hand on her and starts rubbing her leg, while he touches himself with his other hand in front of her.
One day Jeanette and Brian find a diamond ring, so in complete excitement they show it to mom and say, "That ring could get us a lot of food"(Walls 186). But instead of Mom selling the ring she keeps it for her self as a replacement ring for the wedding ring Dad had pawned earlier.
Jeanette suggest mom to divorce dad, as she says it is better financially for the family because of dad's bad habits, mom then explains no and how she think it is not right to divorce dad and says shes surprised Jeanette of all people is suggesting this nonsense.
Jeanette goes swimming with her new best friend and all the other black people for a morning swim, which is not natural because only black people go in the morning for free swim, and only white people go swimming in the afternoon for a paid swim.
