The cigarette caused the house to catch on fire and burn to the ground, causing Uncle Stanley and Grandpa to find a new place to stay. Jeannette and the family goes to visit they Grandpa and Uncle Stanley at their new place. Jeannette was sitting watching TV with her Uncle Stan when he began playing with him self and touching Jeannette on the thigh. Later on in the book Jeannette and Brian are walking through the forest. Jeanette's mother keeps the ring instead. Jeannette confronts her mother while Rex is out of the house and tells her that she needs to leave dad and it will be the best for the family. At the end of the section Jeannette goes swimming with the black community and is welcomed and feels open about her body around them being the only white girl there.

  • Jeanette suggest mom to divorce dad, as she says it is better financially for the family because of dad's bad habits, mom then explains no and how she think it is not right to divorce dad and says shes surprised Jeanette of all people is suggesting this nonsense.
  • Jeanette goes swimming with her new best friend and all the other black people for a morning swim, which is not natural because only black people go in the morning for free swim, and only white people go swimming in the afternoon for a paid swim.
