Jonas has been selected to be the receiver of memory.
Jonas' assignment was "The receiver of Memory". He would go to the Giver's house almost everyday, and the giver would give him memories of the past.

With the job of "Receiver of Memory" came some rules for Jonas. Jonas was not allowed to talk about his his assignment, or tell about his dreams. He was told that he could be rude and that he was able to lie as well.
If everyone made decisions, everything would be crazy.
The Giver's home was different than all of the other houses in the community. The house was isolated, luxurious, and had many books.
On Jonas' first day, the Giver gave Jonas some memories. He was first shown going down a hill on a sled. He saw snow and felt cold for the first time. Next he was shown sunshine, and felt the warmth of the sun for the first time. After that, he felt real physical pain for the first time by receiving sunburn.
In Jonas' community nobody is allowed to make decisions. Jonas was told by the Giver that people making decisions was to dangerous.
Jonas has an ability that makes him able to "see beyond". This means that he can see color and he can receive memories from the giver.
