This is the storyboard with the dialogue between Pope Gregory VII and King Henry IV first.
“I have chosen a bishop and you are to approve him for me, Pope Gregory.”
“I disapprove of that bishop as for the reasons that he is not ready and suitable. I firmly believe that popes, such as I, should be able to choose religious officials rather than a king like you. Pardon my harsh words.”
“Excuse me? You firmly believes popes, like you, should choose religious officials? Well, you see, I believe that kings, such as I, should have the right to choose religious officials.”
“I am sorry to say this, but I substantially believe that popes should decide on religious officials. After all, we are the messengers of God.”
“WELL, I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT I SHALL BE ABLE TO MAKE A DECISION AS WELL! Now, I ask you to leave this instant!”
“How outrageous! A lowly pope such as you? Excommunicate me?! Oh, I don’t believe so!”
“May God forgive me. King Henry IV, you are being excommunicated at this moment. You shall be casted out from the church.”
“I will now leave.”
“You are to return to me this instant or you will be punished!”
“You are forgiven. I will let you go this time. Now enter the church as you please… and do not make any mistakes.”
“Pope Gregory, I am truly sorry for the way I had acted the other day. If I may ask, may I please enter the church again? I promise that I will be good to God. Forgive me, Gregory.”
