  • Montresor explains is long quarrel with Fortunato by sayin, "The thousand injuries of Fortnuato I had bourne..." (Poe, 1). At the same time he prepares for the hideous deed he is about to preform.

  • Montresor meets a drunk Fortunato and convinces him that he has a pipe and amontillando at his house that he wants to be tested.

  • Montresor leads Fortunato through the catacombs while getting him drunk so that it will be easier to control him. All the while Fortunato becomes sicker by the toxins in the caves.

  • Montresor traps Fortunato in a the cave and chains him to the wall and begins trapping him in there. We see a visualization of this with this description, "Throwing the links around his waist, it was but the work of a few seconds to secure it" (Poe, 71).

  • Montresor continues to build the wall further trapping Fortunato inside the cave all while both becoming more and more insane.
