Is river water safe to drink?

Storyboard Text

  • She is stable. Can I speak with you outside.
  • Hello Doctor. How is Tourmaline doing?
  • I guess people have said that drinking river water is unsafe because people in poorer areas who drink it have gotten fatal diseases like Cholera caused by the sediment.
  • What are we going to do? How did she get it?
  • I figured out why Tourmaline is sick. She is suffering from Cholera like a lot of the other patients here at this hospital in Chad.
  • According to the Centers For Disease Control (CDC), "A person may get cholera by drinking water or eating food contaminated with the cholera bacterium. "
  • I guess according to South African Sports Medicine Association, "The majority of Chad's population drinks water from traditional, open wells or from temporary or permanent rivers."
  • How come I haven't heard about this in the U.S.?
  • Well, according to the CDC "Cholera has been virtually eliminated by modern sewage and water treatment systems." For example you drink purified water from bottles.
  • What do we do? How do we treat Tourmaline?
  • Based on one of Katz Jonathan M.'s articles, "The disease, primarily spread when infected fecal matter contaminates food or water, is treatable, mainly by rehydrating the sick with safe water mixed essentially with salt, sugar and potassium or with intravenous fluids. Antibiotics also are used sometimes."
  • Your welcome. Tourmaline will get better Julie.
  • Thank you. I really appreciate all that you are doing for Tourmaline.
