  • James Mercer Langston Hughes also known as Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri on February 1, 1902.

  • Langston lived with his grandmother. They moved a lot until they settled in Cleveland Ohio. Hughes was raised by his grandmother until she passed away, then he moved in with his mother. 
  • Career
  •  Langston graduated from high school in 1920. Langston Went to Lincoln University and Columbia University for college.
  • Death and legacy 
  • Langston started a job in Washington DC as a hotel bus boy.
  • Langston showed his poems to Vachel Lindsay he was so impressed that he promoted Langston's poems. After that, Langston published his first novel "Not Without Laughter."
  • Sadly on May 22, 1967 Langston Hughes died of prostate cancer, later after he died on February 2002 people made a commemorative stamp and made Hughes's home into a landmark status.
