  • When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn't walk, so I set out to teach him.
  • Rising action
  • "Even death did not mar its grace, for it lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers, and we stood around it, awed by its exotic beauty."
  • The story takes place in the south.
  • Climax
  • James wants to teach doodle how to walk, His pride is taking over.
  • Falling Action
  • A scarlet Ibis fall out a tree and dies. It was said to be bad luck.
  • Conclusion
  • "For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of rain."
  • James runs ahead with all his might, leaving doodle alone.
  • "Brother, Brother, don't leave me! Don't leave me!"
  • James decides to go back to doodle.
  • "I hadn’t run too far before I became tired, and the flood of childish spite evanesced as well. I stopped and waited for Doodle."
  • Doodle is dead, his pride won.
