Phineas Gage was working with blasting rock. One day, someone forgot to fill the sand in the blasting whole. Phineas looked away for a moment and then... a 3 foot rod shot through his head. It went through his left cheek, behind his left eye and shot out the front of his head. It then landed 30 feet away.
HEY!!!! I'm the boss here!!!!! Get back here!!!! I want ya'll to wait for me. I want to work too!!!
Sorry Phineas, you are not able to work any more.
Phineas's friends helped him to the cart and road as fast as they could to go find the doctor. They found out that the doctor in town was gone. So then, they drove to the nearby town to get their doctor to come look at Phineas. He survived the whole ride and still was alive when the doctor came to help him.
DADDY!!!! He had a 13 pound rod shot through his head!!!!! He lived through the accident and 11 years more!!
Once the doctor arrived, he began evaluating him. He couldn't believe he was alive. He picked out the pieces of loose brain and skull. Then, he started to bandage him. Pheneas was ordered to rest during his recovery.
Phineas Gage eventually recovered. He lost his left eye and had damage to his frontal brain lobes. He damaged his frontal lobes which caused some behavioral issues. His friends and family said that, " Gage was not Gage."
Phineas Gage lived for another 11 years. Scientist discovered that his condition was a lot like Alzheimer's disease. His injury gave many clues as to how our brain works. His skull and walking stick are preserved in a museum today.
