Beowulf has been known for fighting with his bare hands. In his fight with Grendel, Beowulf discarded his armor and weapons. In the fight against Grendel’s mother, Beowulf fought briefly unarmed. In this scenario, Beowulf is still not afraid to try the same strategy more than once.
Speaking to Wiglaf, Beowulf entrusts Wiglaf to rule the Geats. Beowulf is hopeful that Wiglaf will lead the Geats towards the right path. With Beowulf dead, he will be remembered as a legendary hero.
“I meant to perform to the uttermost what your people wanted or perish in the attempt, in the fiend’s clutches. And i shall fulfill that purpose, prove myself with a proud deed or meet my death here in the mead-hall.”
” I would rather not use a weapon if I knew another way to grapple with the dragon and make good my boast as I did against Grendel in the days gone by.
“Now that I have bartered my last breath to own this fortune, it is up to you to look after their needs. I can hold out no longer.”
