- When I get home im going to drink some milk.I made clay cows with my brothers yesterday.I shot my bow and arrows last week.

- Salva thinks about what his life is in school not listening to the teacher. While telling us about his life, he gives us exposition. Some of the exposition he gives us is that he makes clay cows for fun, he sometimes shoots his bow and arrows, and that his mother is always at home waiting for him after school. those are some of the things he tells us about in the exposition.
- Rising Action
- Salva is at school when he hears gunshots that quickly shut down the exposition, moving into the action. When they hear gunshots, inside the school everything is crazy. The teachers yell at the kids to run into the bush where they will be supposedly safe. Once they get into a safe part of the bush they separate into their tribes (Salva is in the Dinka Tribe) and set off together.
- Rising Action
- Salva is at the rebels camp. His group was taken captive by the rebels and taken to their camp. The tribes separate into two groups:men and women and children. Salva attempts to join the mens group but he is caught and sent to the women and children group.
- Rising Action
- Salva is with the old woman at her house. After waking up in an empty barn where he slept the previous night with his tribes group he walks outside feeling hopeless and sad. When he doesn't see his group he feels lonely, sad, and hopeless but then he sees a woman. He finds out that the woman is very kind and they live together for the next few days but then she has to leave and Salva finds himself with another group of Dinka after promising not to slow them down.
- Buksa and Salva find a beehive. After a few days Salvas group joins with a group of Jur-chol. When the group is walking and exhausted , Buksa hear a honey-guide bird that leads them to a bee hive filled with honey. A short time and a lot of bee stings later, the group has a bee hive filled with honey and they eat and enjoy it.
- Salva Hears a familiar voice behind him. When he sees who it is, he is overjoyed. It was his uncle! He was so happy to see someone from his family after so long without them. Salva saw he had a gun and he was happy for that too for now they had protection and something to get food with.
