Hi Sis. I had a very interesting class last night about knowing yourself and impressions management
Impression management, that sounds intriguing. What is that about?
Do you know that quote from William Skakespeare, "All's the world a stage, And all the men and women merely players, They have their exits and entrances, And no man in his time plays many parts."
I have heard it, but never really understood what it meant.
Erving Goffman coined the term impression management in 1959 and from then on, sociologists and theorists have been adding insight and importance to the concept. According to Newman (2009), impression management is an “act presenting a favorable public image of oneself so that others will form positive judgments."
Hhhmmmm...can you simplify it a little for me please?
Simply put, you know how in front of mum and dad, they see you as responsible, caring, level-headed, but in front your friends you are outgoing, fun and carefree? It means you give off two impressions of yourself to two different sets of people. Also at work they see you as hardworking.
So sometimes when someone says that another is two-faced, that's not it. It just means that one is trying to control how others see them and manages what is shown to whom.
There's a program tonight on strategies used in managing impressions. We should check it out!
Please stay tuned as we have Dr. Linda Johnson and Dr. Frank Boyd who will share with us a few strategies that we use to manage our impressions.
Sure Sis. Great idea!
Wow Sis, you have given me a lot to think about. I never thought of this but you are so correct, we manage how we want people to see us.
