Storyboard Text

  • How You Come To Know Yourself
  • Very good Anna. Now based on your reading, can anyone tell me 2 ways in which we come to know ourselves?
  • Good Evening Class. Welcome to Ways on How to Come to Know Yourself.
  • Can anyone tell me what it means to know yourself?
  • How You Come To Know Yourself
  • We come to know ourselves by analyzing ourselves which is through introspection and by the way people react to us.
  • In order to know myself, it means that I am aware of my strengths and weaknesses, my likes and dislikes, my fears, dreams and values
  • How You Come To Know Yourself
  • Excellent Josh
  • Schuttz (2012) defines introspection as the examination of one's own conscious thoughts and feeling.  It involves carefully examining one's own behaviour, thoughts, emotions and mental notes. During introspection, one relies on his memory, and draws on his past experiences to analyze his current behaviour.

  • How You Come To Know Yourself
  • Excellent question Jasmine. Critics of introspection like Behaviorists Watson and Skinner condemned introspection as they did not view it as an observable behaviour and therefore it would lack empirical or scientific support.
  • Wundt who coined introspection wanted to train people to analyze the content of their own thoughts. However Watson stated that this was impossible in a scientific manner as it could not be observed and it could not be reliably recorded
  • How You Come To Know Yourself
  • Miss I agree with Skinner and Watson. You cannot truly know yourself. You can know degrees of yourself and still be surprised by your daily thoughts and emotions.
  • Ok Josh. And finally, another way to know yourself is by observing how people react to us, seeing ourselves as we think others see us. Jones & Gerard (1967) claim that reflected appraisals shape our self concept.
  • Miss a question.  Would introspection be reliable as we cannot always rely heavily on our memories.
