Hernando De Sotoleft Spain at age 14.He went only with a sword and a shield fighting Indians in Panama
He earned the title “Child of the Sun” for conducting raids at dawn on unsuspecting villages.He would capture village chiefs and hold them for ransom in exchange for other tribe members.
He would use his own resources to get lots of horses and pigs and men.Then de Soto would use these men and women as slaves.
The king made De Soto Governer of Cuba in 1537
The king granted De Soto a four year charter to conquer and colonize La Florida but didn give him money, soilders, nor weapons
De Soto and his men landed near Tampa Bay, Florida at the end of May 1539.
They believed rumors of gold to the north, so they began traveling northeast toward Georgia.
Finding no gold or riches, De Soto and his men left Georgia and continued their expedition through the entire southeast
On May 21, 1542 De Soto died of a fever in Arkansas, and his men wrapped his body in blankets, weighed it with sand and sank it in the middle of the Mississippi River.
