The Baudelaires find three more couplets under the nevermore tree in the next three days and continue to decipher the code in them.
One day everyone gets called to a town meeting about officer Luciana capturing Count Olaf but he is not Count Olaf he is someone named Jacques who is innocent.
Later Count Olaf (Jacques) is murdered by the actual Count Olaf and Detective Dupin (Count Olaf) accuses the Baudelaires of murdering him.
The Baudelaires go to jail for committing a crime they did not do but they use bread and water to escape by disintegrating the material used to stick bricks together. Klaus also cracks the code of the couplets and finds out the Quagmires are in the Foul Fountain.
The Baudelaires rescue the Quagmires and head to the self sustaining hot air mobile home in the sky so they can escape.
The Baudelaires try to get onto the self sustaining hot air mobile home but officer Luciana and Detective Dupin stop them but the Quagmires are safe in the sky. The Baudelaires later find out that officer Luciana was Esmé Squalor and her and Count Olaf escape.
